The correct lubricant for chains and sprockets is directly related to the service life of chains and sprockets alike but also to the frequency of costly repairs and downtimes. It’s important to remember that effective chain lubrication has to meet the requirments of boundary lubrication, meaning that an oil alone will not be adequate to prevent wear. There is a great reliance on the quantity of extreme pressure additives together with solid lubricants to ensure proper pin, link and tooth protection. In most instances higher viscosity oils are relied on to ensure adequte film strenght but in the case of the super high loads and the inability of thick oils to penetrate deep into the chain workings, very often the presence of oils may only be as the carrier or diluent and the chemistry is largely responsible for wear protection. The operating environment is respect of dust colelction and amount of polymer to prevent unwanted fling has also to be considered.
