Traditionally open gear and wire rope lubricants have been bitumen based. Given the tightening up of envirnmental legislations in respect of ground water contaminants and disposal and legislation around the human handling of known carcinogens, the use of more inert high viscosity synthetics is being conisdered as alternatives. The choice is synthetic and oil base plays a critical role in the performance of these lubricants which are required to meet, even exceed, the high weld loads, water resistance, tooth transfer and high film strenght properties that bitumen inherantly has with a far kinder envirnmental and disposal profile. Herschell range of open gear lubes meet the 1000kg 4-Ball weld loads and FZG stage 14 performance specifications and can be pumped through most central lubricating systems too. We also incorporate a first aid paste which when used with our open gear lubricants are able to assist with run-in and also repair gear flanks which have been pitted and spalled.
