As with open-gear lubricants, wire rope lubricants have traditionally been bitumen based. The same envirnmental and human handling concerns have forced tribologists and engineers to consider alternatives. Essentially these alternatives are synthetic based, high viscosity oil blends or low consistency greases. What both have in common is the ability to wet and penetrate the rope strands sufficiently to deliver a film of lubricant that prevents the effects of thread-scuffing when under load, to adhere to the outside of the rope to prevent wear on the rope whilst being wound and of equal importance to prevent the ingress of water into the rope threads where it will corrode. As with our open gear greases, the rope dressing can be pumped through central lubricating systems.
